Daily Crack - Saugerites Bed and Breakfast

Not your typical B&B.  The room we stayed in, the   Chateau Room,” was built around two magnificent French doors.  The rest of the home is English Tudor including the one other room the couple rents out, the “Tudor Room.”

Tucked away in the Hudson Valley is this beautiful English Tudor estate in Saugerites, New York, not far from Woodstock.  On absolutely stunning property filled with wonderfully tended gardens, tranquil views, backdrops of the Catskills, and a narrow 50 foot length 4 foot deep swimming pool, we were amused to find that the room we were staying in was actually built so the owners could find a place to put these doors.  (Note door on right in photo.)

The husband of the couple who own the property, laid the foundation, and built the room where we slept, is a sculptor; and you can find his sculptures scattered in different areas amid the grounds.  This very special room leaves one feeling as if they are staying in an extravagant home just outside of Paris, enjoying the luxury of their room and the countryside around them.  Completely coincidental and a bit funny too, as we were enjoying our stay in the French Chateau Room, a French couple with two small children, were staying in the much larger, opposite end of the house English Tudor Room.

With the two beautiful French doors on either side of us and in front of us a wall of windows detailing exquisite woodwork of ovals and small wooden panes that overlook a private patio and garden area that house two reclining chairs at the edge of a ledge; our view of several acres of a rolling hill that gently meets the water of the Esopus Creek, gave us the well deserved break that we needed to refuel for our Manhattan lifestyles.  That and the firefly show that continued to entertain us through the night.

Not a big fan of most B&B’s as I find people on top of each other and enjoy being a little less conspicuous, the Saugerites Bed & Breakfast is very private.  You are being given your own private little wing with your own entrance and garden, on a wonderful estate owned by a delightful, but not in your face couple who without a doubt love the property they are sharing with you.

The only downside to the Chateau Room is that the bathroom only has a shower and not a big old tub. (The Tudor room has both a bathtub and a fireplace.) But with all the other pluses and amenities of our room, it would have been additional icing on a totally sublime cake, and given what we had, we were already perfectly satiated and happy.

For an additional $12 a person you will get a fabulous home cooked brunch set up for you and served on your own private patio or terrace.

The Saugerites Bed & Breakfast, a stroke of luck and a great find!
